There once was a blacksmith who had two pieces of iron that he wanted to weld into one. First he took them separately just as they were, cold and hard, and put them on the anvil and began to hammer with all his might, but still two pieces remained - they would not unite. Then he remembered what he was taught. So he thrust both pieces of iron into the fire, took them out red hot, laid one on the other, and with merely several blows of the hammer, the TWO became ONE.
On the day of Pentecost God's Spirit did the same for his people. Pentecost brought people from all walks of life and dramatically transformed their lives; God forged his church by turning them into not just any old group, but into a community of believers who are now united by ONE Spirit – precisely the kind needed (unified) to produce vital steps of growth (in the church).
