In ancient times the hungry gods,
       Imaged in wood or stone,
Enjoyed a living sacrifice
       Of human flesh and bone.

Today the gods, more subtle, lurk

       Where wheels and motors roar,
Though still the living sacrifice
       Is offered as before.
