Mt.
3:4-6; 11; 13-14
Oh
the anticipation on the wet faces of all those people John brought up out of
the water The radiant hope in the faces
of all those who asked John if he was the one they had been waiting for. They were so sincere in their expectation,
so expectant in their hopeful anticipation for the coming of Christ that in
their hearts they were all wondering if John just might be the one.
I’m
sure John tried his best to hide his own disappointment at not finding the
Messiah among the people in the crowd. His
body was waist deep in the Jordan River, but I bet his mind was elsewhere; scanning the crowd with his eyes….searching for the One he was preaching about....one after another the people come to John to
be baptized.
Then,
suddenly, out of the clear blue, a glimpse of unexpected sunlight brightens the
moment and the beads of sweat on the man’s face standing before him unexpectedly
turn dry, and the haze of heat becomes suddenly clear, and John recognizes who
it is…"I need to be baptized by YOU,"
John said (as he swallowed the
lump in his throat)…"yet you come to ME."
Isn't it amazing, isn't it wonderful, isn't it a grace-filled miracle, that, despite our unworthiness and all of our worldliness, our
Lord continues to come to us, as well. A good reason to be grateful, isn't it.
